Brazil based Biselli + Katchborian architects has designed a Information Center of the new Petrochimical Complex of Rio de Janeiro – COMPERJ – PETROBRAS, located in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
+ PROJECT MEMORIAL
History and Geography equally contributes to the construction of the extraordinary beauty of the site. The Geography through different geologic accidents and vegetation. The History is expressed in a precious fragment of the old “São Boavetura Convent”, eloquent witness of Brazilian architecture and culture in general.
The Project for the Information Center for the Petrochemical Complex of Rio de Janeiro – called COMPERJ, coordinated by Petrobras, the state-owned oil company – bourns from the will of belonging more to Geography than History. A building that rejects the temptation to promote any movement that would disturb the landscape elements, still in perfect balance.
The search of a metaphoric reference on the geologic configuration also finds its meaning in the energy sources proceeding from the earth depth, which exploration constitutes the very trade of the institution for which the building is destined to establish.
The building adopts a half-buried solution and builds the space from a square floor, composed by two slabs, one for the floor and other for the roof. The masterplan follows a strict geometry formed from the convent and the campanile tower.
The main access is formed by the ramp and the civic square, converted into a memorial for the Cornerstone, from where the entire program is distributed through its perimeter.
The masterplan is arranged to make a connection between the Convent and the new building: both tops are assigned to the same level in order to preserve the best possibilities to view the complex and to define the open air museum.
The Information Center will be built from a mix of steel and concrete structure, and also, masonry walls for the wet areas and light weight walls to be used in the workspace areas.
The external cladding is a curtain wall off steel and glass that covers the whole perimeter. The solar protections are provided by the shape of the steel structure. Thus, the project holds a good selection of materials with great resistance, durability, and economy.

The roof surface is destined for the solar energy capitation necessary for the building functioning. Acoustic isolation was used according to the needs of the rooms, like the auditorium and the 3d room.
The pluvial and condensed (from air conditioning) water reutilization and the treatment of solid residues are the main line direction that guides the project. Respecting the environment conditions of the area where it is situated, reducing the building impact.
Collect, filtering, U.V. treatment, and the reutilization of condensed and pluvial are the foreseen in this project. The pluvial water will be collected in the roof and water-proof areas. The surroundings of the building will be provided with a natural drainage of pluvial area and maximum permeable areas. The landscaping proposal aims the utilization of the native vegetation, looking forward to preserve the local biodiversities.
