First Chair \ Jonathan DORTHE for Atelier-D

• January 15, 2013

Jonathan DORTHE designed the First Chair for Atelier-D.

+ Design statement

The idea of this project was to design a simple chair that I could make in my workshop with the tools I had. All the pieces are cut from a flat sheet of Russian plywood, and then assembled using traditional joinery techniques. The front and back legs interlock in an ‘’X’’ shape, creating a strong bracing system. The back legs are shaped to support the seat, and the front legs are designed to create the back support. The end result of this exercise is a singular and minimalist first chair.
