This is a whimsical yoga studio by SHKS Architects. The project is carefully sited in a grove of Douglas Fir and provides a quiet place for exercise and contemplation. The building is set above the ground to lighten its footprint while its simple form provides an elegant counter point to the surrounding trees and landscape. Thoughtfully placed openings allow light to fill the interior while preserving a sense of privacy. The exposed wood structure, western red cedar cladding, and wood finishes provide visual warmth and enrich the quality of the place.
Western Red Cedar cladding was chosen for its appearance, durability, and ease of working. The cladding was carefully selected for character and graining, then stained on all sides with a penetrating oil stain to further enhance its appearance. The horizontal application of the cladding extends the visual line of the structure in contrast to the tall surrounding Douglas Firs. Western Red Cedar was also chosen for the sauna and the exposed decking at the roof, complimenting the cedar used on the exterior and providing a warm richly textured finish for the interior.
